What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the longest established forms of healthcare and an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in which fine needles are inserted at specific points of the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.

Traditional acupuncture is based on the theory that an energy, or “life force” known as Qi, flows through the body in channels called meridians.  If Qi doesn’t flow freely through the body, there might be illness such as pain.  Acupuncture is believed to restore the flow of Qi, thereby strengthening the energy and improving health. The treatment focus is on you as an individual, a whole being, as well as your symptoms to restore your physical, emotional and mental equilibrium.

Modern research shows that the use of acupuncture may involve stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles, resulting in the body producing natural substances, such as endorphins, our body’s own painkillers.  It is possible that these naturally released substances can result in biochemical changes to promote physical and emotional wellbeing.

Acupuncture is used most commonly for pain relief in such conditions as headaches, migraines, musculoskeletal pain, as well as for a wide range of conditions like insomnia, anxiety, and other psycho-emotional disorders; gastrointestinal complains such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); post-cancer treatment and the like.
